10/12 Magazine: Former Pittsburgh mayor keynotes Lafayette banquet - Wednesday, January 12, 2011
Former Pittsburgh Mayor Tom Murphy is the keynote speaker for the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce annual banquet. Murphy is a senior resident fellow at the Urban Land Institute, a multidisciplinary real estate forum dedicated to creating better cities. Since January 2006, Murphy has been ULI's Gulf Coast liaison, helping to coordinate with the leadership of New Orleans and the public. Prior to that, Murphy served three terms as mayor of Pittsburgh, during which he initiated a public-private partnership strategy that leveraged more than $4.5 billion in economic development. Murphy led efforts to secure and oversee $1 billion in funding for the development of two professional sports facilities and a new convention center in Pittsburgh that is the largest certified green building in the United States. He also developed strategic partnerships to transform more than 1,000 acres of blighted, abandoned industrial properties into new commercial, residential, retail and public uses; plus oversaw the development of more than 25 miles of new riverfront trails and urban green space in Pittsburgh. Prior to being mayor of Pittsburgh, Murphy was elected to eight terms in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He focused legislative activities on changing western Pennsylvania's economy from industrial to entrepreneurial and authored legislation requiring the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania pension fund to invest in venture capital. The banquet will be held from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 20 in the Cajundome Convention Center. For more information, click here.
