The Advertiser: Ribbon-cutting held for new CNG-powered buses - Wednesday, October 05, 2011

Lafayette officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning for five new buses that operate on compressed natural gas, which are touted as being more environmentally friendly that traditionally fueled vehicles.
The event was held in conjunction with a CNG workshop hosted by the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce and the Acadian Companies.
The CNG buses were ordered following approval by the City-Parish Council in September of 2010. The cost was paid from Federal Transit Administration Formula Grant and Discretionary Capital Grants with local matching funds being supplied by Lafayette Consolidated Government.
Federal Recovery Act funds from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Acts were also used in the procurement.
The buses began operation Sept. 13. Each of the five CNG buses cost about $430,000 and will provide transit services for the next 12 years. LCG plans to eventually convert all its "big” buses to CNG.
Converting to CNG vs. diesel fuel will provide for much cleaner-burning vehicles and will reduce overall fuel cost of LCG fleet to the citizens of Lafayette by 30-50 percent, officials said.
